Dear Tom,
Thank you for this great mod!
I work at the National Museum of Denmark, and in our collections we have some astounding artefacts from the Norse settlements in Greenland (not least the clothing).
I have a few suggestions that might help if we want to emulate the Norse Greenlandic living:
– Sheep herding was the most important occupation (since cereals could not be consistently cultivated in the climate) and it was not only beneficial for the wool, skins, and meat; the Norse people also depended on the sheep milk for drinking and cheese production, as well as the dung which, when dried, was used as fuel. So my suggestion here would be to make sheep produce some milk (less than cows obviously) and dung (similar properties as peat I guess) – this resource could also be used in farming settings for increased output.
– Even the most harsh conditions in the mod includes trees. For a real North Atlantic experience we would need a climate without trees; but also access to driftwood (could be spawned along major rivers/lakes).
– Some production building chains require quite a lot of wood etc. and it would be nice if we could get turf workshops (similar to the log workshop extensions) which allow for e.g. tailor work (very important for the sheep herding societies obviously).
– I would love to see Norse names for the inhabitants. Here’s a good source for that (names from Landnámabók): https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html
Best regards,
Thorkell (Gustaf)
Hello and welcome Gustaf,
sorry to be so late to your post! Maybe you still read it.
A dedicated Greenland scenario would be interesting, but there are quite some issues. It would require maritime resources that could be traded to support at least a modest coastal settlement. Historically it would be ivory but right now, I don’t know how to implement this in a convincing way and exclusivly in a Greenland start. Continiously spawning driftwood is another problem, the game is full of limitations. And there would be the oddity of driftwood on Greenland river shores. So with a new version, I would probably prefer to improve the general Seafarer conditions in relation to the Icelandic environment.
Livestock can only have one additional resource in the game, so no milk from sheep. And for gameplay, milk is actually a really good niche for the cows.
Workshops that match the turf houses are definitely a thing. It should be possible to process wool into simple clothing on a small farmstead. Added to my list.
And Norse names, of course. If this were possible, I would have already filled the mod with a database full of nice names. Fortunately, the default names are not completely out of place for a Nordic society. There is even a real Ella in the game.
Thank you for your good suggestions! Things have been quiet here for years without updates, but that might change.
